Yasujirō Matama edited a picture book entitled Kachō Gafu (i.e., Picture Album of Flowers and Birds) which was published in 1891. The book’s eighteen pictures of flowers and (or) birds are shown in this gallery. Click on a picture to enlarge it. The anonymous artist drew shapes accurately but colored them only in shades of gray, perhaps because the pictures were intaglio-printed and multi-color intaglio printing was rare in Japan at the time.
